Strophanthus gratus

Strophanthus gratus

Strophanthus gratus, commonly known as the climbing oleander or poison arrow vine, is a tropical vine native to Africa. Despite its common name, it is not closely related to oleander plants. Renowned for its striking appearance and medicinal properties, it is cultivated for both ornamental and therapeutic purposes.

This vigorous climbing vine features glossy green leaves and produces clusters of unusual, star-shaped white flowers with maroon or purple markings at the center. The flowers, which bloom throughout the year in warm climates, emit a sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators like butterflies and bees.

Strophanthus gratus is known for its toxic properties, particularly in its seeds, which contain cardiac glycosides used in traditional medicine. Extracts from the plant have been historically used to treat heart conditions and as arrow poisons by indigenous peoples.

Despite its toxicity, Strophanthus gratus is appreciated for its beauty and cultural significance, adding a touch of exoticism to gardens and landscapes while also contributing to the rich tapestry of traditional medicine practices.
